En la 15 novel.la del Món Disc, i segona de la Guàrdia, una facció de l'aristocràcia, liderada per Edward D'Eath, vol restaurar la monarquia per recuperar el poder perdut.
El capità Carrot, fill adoptiu de nans, resulta ser-ne l'hereu legítim, encara que no està gaire interessat en ser el nou monarca.
Al mateix temps, el capità Vimes es prepara per al seu casament amb lady Sybil Ramkin, i per passar a formar part d'aquesta aristocràcia que li queda tan lluny. Mentrestant, lluita perquè la Guàrdia tingui major diversitat, incorporant-hi nans, trolls i fins i tot una dona llop.
Mentrestant es produeix una sèrie de misteriosos assassinats, que Lord Vetinari prohibeix investigar, per assegurar-se que, efectivament, siguin investigats.
A destacar el contrast entre Carrot, l'honestedat en persona, i el més curtit capità Vimes. Per la resta, una bona parodia de les novel.les policíaques.

Besides, when you hit your thumb with an eight-pound hammer it's nice to be able to blaspheme. It takes a very special and strong-minded kind of atheist to jump up and down with their hand clasped under their other armpit and shout, "Oh, random-fluctuations-in-the-space-time-continuum!" or "Aaargh, primitive-and-outmoded-concept on a crutch!”
